Unit 1: Philosophy of Nursing Science

1.1 Understanding Nursing Philosophy
Philosophy in nursing provides a perspective for practice. It addresses the nature of existence (Ontology) and the nature of knowledge (Epistemology).

Positivism: Science should be based on observable, measurable facts.

1.2 The Metaparadigm of Nursing
Every major nursing theory is built on these four pillars:
Person: The recipient of care (individual, family, or community).

Environment: The internal and external surroundings that affect the person.
Health: The degree of wellness or well-being the person experiences.

Theories are categorized based on their level of abstraction

3.2 Sister Callista Roy: Adaptation Model
Core Idea: The person is a biopsychosocial adaptive system.

Nurse’s Role: To promote adaptation in four modes: Physiological, Self-concept, Role function, and Interdependence.

3.3 Martha Rogers: Unitary Human Beings
Core Idea: Humans and their environment are irreducible energy fields.

Key Concept: “Homeodynamics”—the way the life process evolves.
